Arraigo (rooting) is a Spanish immigration mechanism that allows foreigners who are residing irregularly in Spain to obtain legal residency. The 2025 immigration reform (RD 1155/2024) expanded from 3 to 5 arraigo routes and reduced the stay requirement from 3 to 2 years.
The 5 Arraigo Routes
1. Arraigo Sociolaboral (Social and Work Ties)
For those who can demonstrate 2 years of irregular stay in Spain and a work contract of at least 20 hours/week (or 30 hours/week if hired by multiple employers).
2. Arraigo Familiar (Family Ties)
For those with direct family connections to a Spanish citizen or legal resident. This route does not require a minimum stay period.
3. Arraigo for Second Chance (Segunda Oportunidad)
For individuals who previously held legal residency but fell into irregularity. Must demonstrate 2 years of prior legal residence and 2 years of irregular stay.
4. Arraigo for Training (Formacion)
For those who enrol in vocational training leading to a qualification. The permit is valid for 1 year and can be converted to a work permit upon completion.
5. Arraigo for Collaboration (Colaboracion)
For individuals who collaborate with authorities in fighting organised crime or labour exploitation. This is a protected route with specific safeguards.
